One time on the way back from the Christmas Party, I fell asleep on the bus.  I’d worked until early that morning, slept for only a few hours, then gotten up to go park-hopping before the Party started later that night.  It had been a fun, but exhausting, day, and my eyelids refused to stay open.

I don’t remember much of nodding off, but I do remember waking up.

“Wake up, Sleeping Beauty,” a voice said.  “We’re here.”

I opened my eyes and colors and shapes took form.  Above me, a very special Pirate’s face was set into a small smile.  It took a second to realize I’d fallen asleep on his shoulder; he’d wiggled it to force me to consciousness. 

We’d arrived at Chatham and he needed to get off.

“Oh, I’m sorry!” I sputtered, sitting up, trying to focus my still-sleepy brain.  “I didn’t mean to lean on you.  You should have woken me up!”

He laughed as he stood up and took his place in line to file off the bus.

“Thought about it,” he admitted, “but you looked so cute.”

And without another word, he walked off the bus, leaving me struggling for words.

“Now you listen to me, James Hawkins.  Ya got the makings of greatness in ya.  But you got to take the helm and chart your own course.  Stick to it, no matter the squalls!  And when the time comes you really get the chance to test the cut of your sails and show what you’re made of…well, I hope I’m there, catchin’ some of the light comin’ off ya that day.”

I remember  when I was in my senior year of high school, my English teacher got us all in a circle and asked us what our plans for the future were.  When she got to me, I proudly said I was going to move to Florida and work for Disney.  A few people in the circle laughed, and some asked me sarcastically how I was going to pull that off.

Well.

I have worked for Disney.  And in August I’ll be moving to Florida.  Where, again, I will work for Disney.

So out of all of us, who managed to make their dreams come true?  Who pulled it off?   I did.
